Wildwood’s swim team is a recreational summer swim team for those who can swim at least one length of the pool without stopping or touching the bottom. It is a great way to stay active in the summer and is meant for fun! The Stingrays compete throughout the months of June and July against other swim teams in the area. The season consists of six dual meets and two championship meets (the A meet and the B meet). As a general rule, it does not offer in the water training. If you have a swimmer who needs more hands on training, Wildwood offers a training team program throughout the summer.
What is a dual meet?
A dual meet is where the Stingrays will compete with one other swim team from the Lynchburg area. These meets generally take place on Monday evenings. We will have three home dual meets and three away dual meets, which take place at the opposing team’s pool.
What is the B meet and when is it?
The B meet is a championship meet consisting of all of the swim teams from the Lynchburg area (there are 12 swim teams in the Lynchburg area). This is for swimmers of ALL ability levels. It is a fun meet where swimmers have a great time and compete against swimmers of similar abilities. The more swimmers we have at this meet the greater chance we have of placing! WE ARE HOSTING THE B MEET THIS YEAR! Therefore, we would like to see a lot of participation and we will need a lot of help!
What is the A meet and when is it?
The A meet is also a city-wide championship meet consisting of all of the swim teams in the area. This meet is for the swimmers who earn “A times” throughout the summer or for the swimmers who win their events at the B meet.
When should we arrive for home meets?
Swim meets begin at 6:00pm, but for home meets we need volunteers to arrive by 4:30pm.
What does it mean to sign out of a meet?
If your swimmer is unable to attend a meet, please have them “sign-out” of the meet. There is a sign-out sheet in the pavilion on the bulletin board.
What are the M&M relays?
The M&M relays are special relays just for the 10 and under swimmers. This meet consists of solely relays (no individual events). The relays are often silly in nature and are more about spirit, camaraderie, and teamwork than anything else. The kids always have a great time.
How can we (parents) help?
Parents can help in many ways throughout the summer:
Sign-up to help at a meet. We need timers, stroke and turn judges, place judges, hospitality workers, and concession stand volunteers. (If you are nervous about volunteering the first time, shadow a veteran swim parent until you are comfortable)
Ask Susan Davidson if she needs help – she is always doing something for the swim team
Give concession stand donations
Have a positive attitude
What are some activities available to the swim team?
Each year the swim team has special activities and events that take place throughout the summer. The dates vary depending on the year and schedule, but in general you can expect the following:
An ice cream social
Team trip
Late night swim
A lip sync video
B-meet pep-rally
A-meet pep-rally (for the swimmers who qualify)
